ASAKUSA Underground > Nampa (romance-seeking) in Asakusa
There are plenty of Nanpa hunting grounds in Tokyo. Ask any
romance-seeking samurais where they do it. They may answer, "In Roppongi", "Shinjuku",
"Shibuya" or "Ikebukuro". Not many samurais hunt their romance in Asakusa, of
course, but it hardly means Asakusa is a bad place for it.
There are some good reasons why you should do it there.
-You don't have to compete against other street Nanpa-shi
(romance-seekers-on-the-street).
The biggest advantage of romance-seeking in Akasaka is your potential
competitors totally ignore this place.
Nanpa beginners often go to better-known places as mentioned above,
simply because they see more people there. It is not a good idea. In order to hunt
your romantic game successfully, you should avoid those spots. At better-known
spots, too many love samurais have tried to take chances, or "over fished",
so the girls there are not friendly at all.
Try having a chat with a girl in Shinjuku Nishi-guchi Chikagai (Shinjuku
station West Exit underground shopping moll). Most of the girls may ignore you.
Or maybe not. Honestly, the author cannot really tell you because he is
Japanese. If you are non-Japanese, it can be another story. She might answer your
"Hi, I am John Smith. I want be your friend." with a nice smile, because you
are a guest from abroad and she may think it is not polite to ignore you.
The author had an experience in Spain. It was at Grand Via in Madrid. He
thought at first, "Well, let's meet friendly senoritas." However, it was not that
easy at all. It was as difficult as in Tokyo.
On the other hand, at Salamanca, a small provincial town in the same Spain,
when he tried to talk to girls, they were very nice to him. They were not
afraid of strangers. It was "the miraculous draught of fishes".
In which is it easier to do Nanpa, in town or in the country? No matter which
civilisation you belong to, it is in the country. Don't you agree? If yes, we
can use the analogy to answer the next question.
Which are the better spots, fashionable areas or old-fashioned areas?
Well, the latter like Asakusa, aren't they?
-Prices in Asakusa are low.
After you talk to a girl and are acquainted, you are going to take her
somewhere. You may have to buy her a dinner or entertain her at a nightclub.
If you are travelling in your own jet, money is not your concern. But if
you are an ordinary backpacker, you don't want to spend a lot of money for one
night stand. Asakusa is ideal for you.
Prices in Asakusa are lower than in other parts of Tokyo. Therefore, a
room in a love hotel costs less. You can even find a love hotel where you pay
just 3,000 yen for Rest (→see note). Compared to the charges at hotels in other
areas of Tokyo, it is amazingly cheap. Asakusa is a good place for making love
economically.
Some girls might be snobbish and prefer going to places that are more
expensive, but in general, it is not the case in Asakusa. If you meet a girl here
and take her to a cheap cafe or an inexpensive Izakaya (a Japanese bistro)
nearby, she will not be offended. It is because she probably likes Asakusa very
much.
If you meet a girl in chic Ginza district, it is toally different. She
might say no to your invitation if you ask her to go to a cheap eat-in with you.
In addition, you don't find any economical love hotels. There is no hotel de
passe in Ginza! If you do Nanpa there, you will spend a fortune and the girl
might tell you good-bye while you getting nothing at all. Ginza is not your
first choice for romance-seeking.
<Note>
