ASAKUSA Underground > English Conversation Cafe
There are many English conversation cafes in Tokyo.
An English conversation cafe? Is it a school or something?
What exactly is it?
It is an ordinary cafe/coffee shop for
1) Japanese who want to speak or learn English
and
2) Travelers from abroad who want to speak English or make friends with Japanese.
It gives both parties good opportunities to do these things.
While traveling in Japan you may speak to locals at a hotel or somewhere, but it is just exchanging a few words with them. It is rather a formality than a real humane conversation. In fact, it is rare to have a real talk about a certain subject with a local.
"I want to talk to them." "I want to discuss with them." "I want to make friends with a local boy/girl."
Don't you think so?
It is frustrating not being able to communicate with Japanese, isn't it?
Going to an English conversation cafe is your answer.
Besides, you can meet fellow English speakers there. If you travel Japan alone avoiding snobbish international hotels and backpacker ghettos, you may sometimes feel a little homesick. Going there could be your fast aid. Especially when you have a visa problem or look for a job, you might meet a Mr. Know-all there.
In principle, an English conversation cafe is a Japanese-language-free zone. You are not supposed to hear machine-gun-like Tokyo accent. Although you have to manage with your choppy Japanese outside, you feel at ease with your perfect English inside.
You are there to be well accepted, neither to be ignored nor to be refused. Gentleman tourists and lady travelers are kings and queens. Especially for lady adventurers, an English conversation cafe is a secret spot to do Nampa (romance-seeking). A girl picks up a boy, which is so-called "Gyaku Nan" (reverse Nampa). You may find a couch-surfing host for the night, or even someone priceless.
Anyway, where people meet other people, there are romances. We wish you a happy surprise.
