By Bicycle ---sell/buy

If you stay in Tokyo more than 10 days, it is worth considering buying a second hand bicycle.

You may not reduce your travel expense much, but you can get something priceless: freedom.
Although Tokyo has a flourishing nightlife, the town does not enjoy night buses like London. Lots of Tokyoites have to run to catch the last train. Otherwise, they have to pay a hefty amount of money to get to their satellite city home.
If you have a bike, you don’t have to be crammed with other passengers in a 24:30 train.
Besides, you can have an absolutely different point of view from other tourists relying solely on public transportation.
To you, Tokyo will become more humane.

Buying a second hand bicycle is not difficult at all.

On the fourth Thursday of January, March, May, July, September, and November, they sell semi-brand new bicycles.

They are the bicycles abandoned on the street, mostly near a station, mended and refurbished by Taito-ku (The borough of Taito).

The price is between 7,000 and 10,000 yen.
Every shop in the list above is allocated two or three bicycles. If they have more potential buyers than bikes, they will have a draw. So, you should go there before 10:00.

They often have other second hand bikes to sell, too.

The cheapest type of bicycle in Japan is called “Mama Chari”.
Chari is the Japanese slang for bike. Mama Chari means a bicycle for a mother.
The bicycle doesn’t have any extra gears to shift into. It is the size of a mountain bike, but without any fancy stuff.
It is the simplest commuter bike with a huge basket in front. The basket is quite useful when a mama goes shopping.

Selling your bicycle is not easy because some Japanese consider that it is rather a small industrial waste than a merchandize.

There is one recycle shop near Asakusa, where you might sell your bike. It is also advised that you should check the price of a bike there before you buy one somewhere else.

If they don’t buy your bicycle or you are not happy about the price they propose, try another recycle shop, which is a little far from Asakusa, near Komagome station, in Kita-ku, another borough.

-Recycle Shop Teishaba リサイクルショップ 停車場

You should not expect that you will be able to recuperate a big portion of what you have paid before. Feel content that you don’t have to abandon your bicycle illegally somewhere near a station. Local Japanese will appreciate your effort.
